The Presbyterian Church USA has voted to change the definition of marriage to include gay marriage.

The new definition was endorsed last year by the denomination's top legislative body as an amendment to the church constitution.

But it still had to gain the approval from the majority of regional bodies or presbyteries.

This change makes it the largest Protestant group to recognize same-sex marriage. The denomination has about 1.8 million members and 10,000 congregations nationwide.

Last year the church started allowing ministers to preside at gay weddings with congregational approval in states where the unions are legal.
