NC Congressman: PayPal No Friend of Gays, Lesbians in 25 Nations
North Carolina officials are pushing back on PayPal's recent cancellation of plans to bring more than 400 jobs and a $3.6 million investment into Charlotte with its new operation center.
The PayPal decision comes after Gov. Pat McCrory signed a bill repealing the transgender bathroom ordinance in Charlotte.
Many expressed concern over the ordinance, saying it would allow anyone identifying as transgender to use a public facility based on the sex they identify with rather than their biological sex.
And critics say the ordinance could literally open the door to sex offenders who could enter a woman's restroom simply by calling themselves transgender.
The new law limits the use of bathrooms, locker rooms and showers to persons of the same biological sex.
According to PayPal President and CEO Dan Schulman, "The legislation invalidates protections of the rights of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender citizens and denies these members of our community equal rights under the law."
Schulman also says the new law promotes discrimination.
North Carolina Lt. Governor Dan Forest is firing back at Pay Pal's decision to cancel its expansion plans in the state.
In a statement released Tuesday he said "if our action in keeping men out of women's bathrooms and showers protected the life of just one child or one woman from being molested or assaulted then it was worth it."
Forest is also warning other industry leaders that North Carolina is not backing down. "If a corporation wanting to do business in North Carolina does not see the worth of our children in the same light then I wish them well as they do business somewhere else," he said.
U.S. Rep. Robert Pittenger, R-N.C., accused PayPal of acting hypocritically.
"PayPal does business in 25 countries where homosexual behavior is illegal, including three countries where the penalty is death," he said. "Yet, they object to the North Carolina legislature overturning a misguided ordinance about letting men into the women's bathroom?"
