DC Metro Officer Arrested for Trying to Help ISIS

WASHINGTON -- A U.S. police officer working for the DC Metro Transit has been arrested and charged for attempting to help the Islamic State.

Nicholas Young, a Fairfax, Virginia native, was taken into custody Wednesday.

Young is accused of purchasing mobile messaging app gift cards he hoped to pass along to ISIS fighters overseas.

The plan was to give those gift cards to an ISIS fighter who would give them to fellow members of ISIS.  That fighter was actually an undercover agent.

Mobile messaging apps are often used by ISIS to aid in covert communications.

According to court documents, Young wrote to the undercover agent, "Respond to verify receipt ... may not answer depending on when as this device will be destroyed after all are sent to prevent the data being possibly seen on this end in the case of something unfortunate."

Young had been on the FBI's radar since 2010 after Metro coworkers reported him for suspicious behavior..

The FBI became even more suspicious after two 2011 trips to Libya. He told investigators he went there to help the rebels in their battle to overthrow Muammar Qaddafi. Undercover agents have since met with Young on 20 separate occasions.

He was arrested in Washington, D.C., at the headquarters and is expected to appear in court Wednesday.

Officials say an attack on the Metro system was never in Young's plans and the Metro was never in any danger throughout the course of the investigation.
