With summer and bikini season in full swing, modesty is always a topic, especially in Christian circles.

Author of Desiring God, John Piper offered his perspective in an interview posted on his blog

Piper says his approach is not rule-based but starts with honoring God and having the Bible impact your life.

"Deep things need to happen in a woman's and a man's soul before they have any chance of thinking and feeling about these things in a way that honors God," he said.

His main point is to teach people to "cultivate the joyful sense that modesty is beautiful."

Most church leaders agree the Holy Spirit ultimately should lead Christians toward pursuing modesty. Piper offered three tips to pastors to help cultivate a culture of modesty within the church:

  1. Work with your church leaders
  2. Get parents on board to create consistent expectations for young people
  3. Understand that modesty is beautiful--renounce any mindset that modest means frumpy

CBN News' Jennifer Wishon has examined the modesty issue within the Church, discussing the roles men and women play in practicing self-control.

"If we all wake up every day focused on honoring and glorifying God, then we'll all dress appropriately," Dannah Gresh, founder of Secret Keeper Girl, said.
