'Cajun John Wayne' Talks Faith, Congressional Run

He's known as the "Cajun John Wayne" and "America's toughest cop," and now Captain Clay Higgins from St. Landry Parish, Louisiana, is running for U.S. Congress.

Higgins became famous as a spokesman for the St. Landry Parish Sheriff's Office. A number of his Crime Stoppers videos went viral because of his no-nonsense approach to calling out criminals. 

Some, however, thought one of his videos went too far though, and Higgins was given the option to either resign or reign in his act. He chose to resign out of principle to continue speaking from his heart. 

Higgins is now running for Louisiana's 3rd congressional district.  He says his decision to resign from the force and run for office was made on bended knee. 

"My wife and I live a humble life. I have a beautiful wife. She's a rock that I lean on and the resignation was very hard," he told CBN's Jenna Browder.

"Never before in my life was I more certain that I was doing the right thing," he continued. "So we went to bended knee. My wife and I basically sequestered ourselves in prayer from the world for a couple of weeks… and when we began reading the messages that had arrived there were thousands and thousands of very heartfelt messages from beautiful patriot Americans, from sea to shining sea, employing me to seek federal office." 

He believes those messages were a sign from God. 

Higgins is up against fellow Republican Scott Angelle. Louisiana's general election is Dec. 10.
