Asra Nomani is a former Wall Street Journal reporter, a Muslim immigrant, a life-long liberal and an American who voted for President-elect Donald Trump.

In an opinion piece in The Washington Post , Nomani shared the reasons she voted for Trump, despite being a woman and a practicing Muslim.

"I - a 51-year-old-Muslim, an immigrant woman of color - am one of those silent voters for Donald Trump. And I'm not a 'bigot,' 'racist,' 'chauvanist' or 'white supremacist,' as Trump voters are being called, nor part of some 'whitelash,'" she wrote.

CBN News spoke with Nomani about her political views and one of the main reasons she chose Trump over Hillary Clinton.

"I am a Muslim and I stand firmly against the extremist interpretation of Islam that's exported to the world from Saudi Arabia and Qatar, and for eight years I have been begging the Obama administration to take a very pragmatic, real approach to that extremism," she said.

"They've refused to do so, doing a tap dance instead, and I as a Muslim American just could not imagine another four years of that kind of tap dance. And so thus I cast my ballot for Donald Trump," she told CBN News.

Nomani also said that as a single mother, she can't afford the premiums offered through Obamacare.

"I have a busted knee right now and I couldn't afford to get into the program," she explained.

Nomani also said that voting for Trump was not easy and has come with a price.

"I have lost friends on Facebook, you know that social media world," she said.

"I've been called every name in the book now. Today I was attacked as being a brown-faced supporter of Trump by a white man, as if liberal white politics allows them to come after me for the color of my skin," she said.
