South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley is calling on people in her state to pray.
That call comes as the murder trial of former North Charleston police officer Michael Slager continues and the death penalty trial gets started for Dylann Roof in the killing of nine black Charleston church worshippers.
"These tragedies continue to happen," Haley said. "But the one constant is how the people of South Carolina responded. The faith was there; the action was people stood hand in hand and loved each other."
Haley spoke at Mother Emanuel AME Church in Charleston. She said when tragedies strike, the residents of South Carolina look for people to love instead of hate.
