New Jersey Woman Combating Food Hunger with Couponing

One New Jersey woman is single-handedly fighting hunger and bringing thousands of meals to people in need with a simple frugal habit---couponing.

Twenty-nine-year-old Lauren Puryear has set out to deliver 30,000 meals to people in need by her 30th birthday, reports NJ.com.

Puryear did not imagine that when she started couponing four years ago that it would grow into a small humanitarian project.

"I started couponing for food items like spaghetti, meatballs, and I was [often] able to get items for free or for little to no money," she explained.

She says she can feed 150 people on just $20, depending on the items.

"There are coupons in the Sunday paper, or online that you can print...so I collect as many as I can, match them to the store and that is how I am able to get the items for free."

Puryear has always had a passion for feeding the hungry, but when her grandmother, who instilled in her the importance of helping others, passed away in 2012 she felt the need to step it up.

She started an organization called For the Love of Others and it aims to assisted people of all backgrounds "through providing opportunities to enable them to live a purposeful life."

She began buying food in bulk at stores like Costco and BJ's, but soon realized she could get more bang for her buck with couponing.

So far Puryear has delivered 5,000 meals in the New Jersey, Baltimore, and Washington D.C. areas and she is confident she will hit her goal next year.

"It's probably the most exhilarating thing I could ever do in life," she said. "The joy of helping other people does not compare to any other accomplishment in my life."
