Towson Prof Rejects Students' Pro-Life Project: 'Tell Your Friends to Run to Planned Parenthood'

An associate professor at Towson University has reportedly blocked students from creating a pro-life project for her class, telling them they should support Planned Parenthood instead.

Lillian Carter's "Sexuality in Diverse Societies" course is a required class for Family and Human Services majors. But the College Fix reports students say she tries to indoctrinate them with pro-choice ideology, telling them abortion is a "back-up contraceptive," "tell your friends to run to Planned Parenthood," and "abstinence is impractical, so it can't really be taught."

Pro-life organization Students for Life of America told the Fix that students were encouraged to choose their own topics for their project. The only guidelines given were students could not have the same topic. But when two students chose to write about "pro-life positives," they were immediately denied.

The Fix obtained copies of the current course syllabus and one from last year. The syllabus from last year indicates a project suggestion titled "Planned Parenthood shouldn't be defunded." However, the teacher removed the suggestion from the current syllabus.

"Although there is a lot of discussion in the class, the discussions are not geared towards anything that would give the opportunity to show differentiating opinions on controversial issues such as abortion, sexuality, birth control, etc," a student told the Fix.

Some conservative students are upset about the teacher's requirements, especially since the class is required for their major.

Kristan Hawkins, president of Students for Life of America, said, "This abuse of power by Professor Carter illustrates why President Trump's free speech protections on college and university campuses is vital."

"The views of pro-life students deserve a public forum especially in a class designed to talk about sex and its consequences," Hawkins continued. "Like every other American, Pro-life students should be free to voice their support for protecting the human rights of preborn children without leftist college professors using their power to discriminate against them."

CBN News recently reported on President Trump's new executive order which protects students from harsh judgments for expressing their beliefs. If a college or university limits a person's expression of free speech, they can lose some of their federal funding.

Prof. Carter is also being accused of pushing progressive beliefs regarding sexuality and feminism. In the first few weeks of the course, students were required to share a list of things that sexually arouse them. In another instance, students had to create alternative names for sexual body parts and acts. Some students have shared she encouraged them to engage in sexual activity. Carter has reportedly even required the students to draw themselves naked to share with the another person in class.

"We were supposed to put an X on the part of our bodies that we didn't like and star the parts of our bodies that we did like (and this was to include the genitalia)," a student shared. "After drawing nude images of themselves, students were expected to "talk about it with a partner."

Carter's alleged actions highlight a bigger problem of liberal professors teaching from a biased perspective. Dr. Mitchell Langbert, a business professor at Brooklyn College, investigated the political registration of 8,688 Ph.D.-holding professors in 61 of the top-ranked liberal arts colleges in a 2017 US News report.

"I could not find a single Republican with an exclusive appointment to fields like gender studies, Africana studies and peace studies," wrote Langbert. "It biases research and teaching and reduces academic credibility."
