U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry made a brief stop at the Vatican Tuesday to meet with a top papal diplomat.

Kerry did not meet with Pope Francis and said he did not expect that to happen. Instead he met with the Vatican's Secretary of State Archbishop Pietro Parolin.

Kerry said they discussed a wide range of topics, from violence in Syria and Africa to peace in the Mideast.

The top American diplomat stopped in Italy on his way to Kuwait, where a conference will be held for humanitarian donors to Syria war victims.

Meanwhile, on Monday in his first "State of the World" address to diplomats from 180 countries, the Pope called for "renewed political will to end the conflict" in Syria.
