The Taliban claimed responsibility for a deadly attack at Pakistan's Karachi International Airport that left at least 18 dead.

The five-hour assault began late Sunday when 10 jihadists disguised as Pakistani police opened fire at the airport. The terrorists were armed with machine guns, grenades, and rocket launchers.

After several hours of intense fighting, police finally regained control.

The Taliban said the assault avenged the death of a Taliban chief killed in a drone strike last November. The Islamist group warned there will be more attacks.

"The message to the Pakistani government is that we are still alive to react to the killings of innocent people in bomb attacks on their villages," Taliban spokesman Shahidullah Shahid said, according to the Washington Post.

Pakistani Defense Minister Khawaja Muhammad Asif called the "act of terror…unforgivable."

"The state will give an appropriate response to such cowardly acts of terror," Asif said. "Those who plan and those who execute the terrorist attacks will be defeated."
