Ukraine Signs Trade Pact with European Union
12-31-1969
Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko signed a trade and economic pact with the European Union on Friday.
He said it could be the most important day for his country since it separated from the Soviet Union.
The agreement unravels preceding President Viktor Yanukovych's decision last November to not join the E.U., a decision which sparked nationwide protests and eventually led to Yanukovych's overthrow and Russia's annexation of Crimea.
Russian separatists are still active in many parts of eastern Ukraine.
