Russia is stationing warships off the northeastern coast of Australia.

The move comes as Russian President Vladimir Putin is attending the G-20 summit of world leaders there.

Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott is pretty angry about it, accusing Russia of trying to reclaim "lost glories" of the Soviet Union.

"Russia is being much more assertive now than it has been for a very long time," he said at a press conference with British Prime Minister David Cameron. "Interestingly, Russia's economy is declining even as Russia's assertiveness is increasing."

Moscow's move is seen by many as a display of force, a way of Putin flexing his muscles and showing the world what Russian military forces are capable of worldwide.

The move comes after the two leaders met on the sidelines of the APEC summit in Beijing, where Abbott reportedly demanded Russia cooperate in the investigation of the MH17 passenger plane shot down in Ukraine in July.

Western experts argue Russian rebels shot down the plane using sophisticated Russian surface-to-air missiles.
