Former Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott is standing by his comments that Western culture is superior to that of Islam.

Abbott wrote he was more than ready to say that a culture that is decent, humane and welcoming is superior to one that thinks it's right to kill in the name of God.

He also wrote of the need to "modernize" Islam in his opinion piece published in the Sydney Daily Telegraph.

Under Abbott's leadership, legislation has been passed that strips Australians of their citizenship if they're convicted of terrorism, domestically or abroad.

"This is a strong statement by the Australian community that if you are a terrorist, if you want to kill your fellow Australians for no other reason than that they don't share your particular religious views, well, you're not one of us," Abbott said.

The current prime minister along with members of the Islamic community have criticized Abbott for his comments.

But radio announcer Alan Jones said that everyday Australians would endorse Abbott's comments, according to The Guardian.
