America is facing new tensions with China. It's a dispute with Beijing over its attempts to take over islands in the South China Sea.

China issued warnings Tuesday after a U.S. Navy warship sailed past one of the islands.

"The actions of the U.S. warship have threatened China's sovereignty and security interests, jeopardized the safety of personnel and facilities on the reefs, and damaged regional peace and stability," China's Foreign Ministry said.

Navy officials say the maneuver was necessary to assert the U.S. position that China cannot create man-made islands in order to claim they have sovereign rights over other disputed islands.
