Army Investigation: Another Friendly Fire Death in Iraq?

WASHINGTON - The Department of Defense announced Monday the death of a soldier who was supporting Operation Inherent Resolve, the U.S.-led military campaign to destroy ISIS in Iraq and Syria.

1st Lt. Weston C. Lee, 25, of Bluffton, Georgia, died Saturday in Mosul, Iraq, while conducting security as part of support to coalition forces. The incident is under investigation.

Lee, who joined the Army in March 2015, was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 325th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne Division in Fort Bragg, North Carolina. 

He was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal, Purple Heart, and the Meritorious Service Medal. 

"1st Lieutenant Wes Lee was an extraordinary young man and officer. He was exactly the type of leader that our Paratroopers deserve," Colonel Pat Work, the commander of the 2nd Brigade Combat Team, said in a statement. 

"Our sincere condolences and prayers are with his family and friends during this difficult time," he said.

Meanwhile, U.S. and coalition military forces continue to attack the jihadist army in Syria and Iraq. 

On Sunday, the coalition conducted 28 strikes, consisting of 73 engagements. This operation is all under the Combined Joint Task Force Operation Inherent Resolve.

Officials reported details of Sunday's strikes, noting that assessments of results are based on initial reports.

In Syria, coalition military forces conducted 20 strikes consisting of 43 engagements against ISIS targets. And in Iraq, coalition military forces conducted eight strikes consisting of 30 engagements against ISIS targets.
