An Egyptian court recommended the death penalty for 683 supporters of the Muslim Brotherhood in the country's latest mass trial.

The defendants, most tried in absentia, are accused of murder and attempted murder of Egyptian police officers during mass riots in Minya last August. One police officer was killed in the attack.

Among the defendants is Mohammed Badie, the Brotherhood's spiritual leader.

The trials have drawn international condemnation. Human rights groups say there's no way the defendants are getting a fair trial.

The same judge, however, reduced most of the death sentences and handed 529 defendants in a similar case in March to life imprisonment.

The same court will hold another session on June 21 to issue the final verdicts, which will be subject to appeal.
