Rev. Rodriguez acknowledges that we live in a troubled, dark world.  In his travels, many people ask him, Is it as dark as we think? Is this the darkest hour?  Rev. Rodriguez says this truly may be the darkest hour.  “We cannot deny we live in dark times,” he says.  “While we cannot deny the canopy of disillusionment hovering upon our current day and age, there exists an undeniable physical and spiritual reality poised to serve as the igniting hope, exposing love and reintroducing grace.”  He says rather than focusing on the darkness, believers in Christ need to focus on the light.  “When light stands next to darkness, light always wins!” says Rev. Rodriguez.  His spiritual reference to light is centered on two declarations: “Let there be light” (which releases the power of light into the world) and “You are the light of the world” (which proclaims that we are creatures who are reflective of an everlasting light).  He reminds us that light reveals clues about God and His characteristics, so understanding more about light helps us know more about Him.

In order to defeat darkness, Rev. Rodriguez reminds us that we need to turn on the light.  Matthew 5:14 says You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden. We must strive to be more like God so that we can be used as His perfectly functioning mirror of truth to others.  Rev. Rodriguez reminds us that God’s light goes beyond just revealing our failures; it also brings healing to our hurting lives.  God’s light will find and reveal our hidden sin which challenges us to deal with those things in our lives that pollute our relationship with Him and with one another.  If we allow His light to beam into ours, revealing both the good and the bad, He promises to uncover things in us we have never known.

“It is the greatest hour to be the light in a darkened world,” says Rev. Rodriguez.  In today’s society, we live in a world where many lights can diminish the true light.  He says Ravi Zacharias describes what we are facing as a “spiritual supermarket..from which we choose whatever form of spirituality we fancy….we think we can follow whichever path we want and still end up with something meaningful.”  Rev. Rodriguez reminds us, “Our light is not something that can be rebranded and distributed as the true light of God.  We must stand out among the many lights of pretense in our midst and shine the incomparable light of Christ.”  Instead of disputing with our words, we must look inward and ensure that we are doing all we can to stand out for Christ in a world where false light is more dangerous than darkness.

Rev. Rodriguez has been identified as one of America’s most influential Hispanics.  He is regarded as one of the most prominent voices in the Kingdom of God and as the lead spokesperson for the 16 million strong Hispanic-American Born Again Christian Community. He has been a featured speaker at the White House and Congressional meetings on Hispanic-American issues and justice concerns.  He currently serves in President Obama’s White House Task Force on Fatherhood.  Rev. Rodriguez is the current President for the National Hispanic Christian Leadership Conference.
