Her Mom Would Be Proud

Sevina lives in Macha, Zambia, where she was raised by both of her parents until she was three years old.

“My father gets sick of AIDS, and then he died,” Sevina says.

Her mother died when she was five. Not long after that, Sevina moved into a new boarding school built and supported by Orphan’s Promise. The new dorms were drastically different from the small mud brick huts in the village.

This is a typical home in Macha, Zambia, and it’s the kind of dwelling place that most of the kids who live at the boarding school would have come from. You can see that in this approximately 10 x 10 home, every square inch of space is used. There’s one bed, no matter how many people there are in the family. So can you imagine what it’s like for these kids to move into a boarding school where they have not only their very own space and belongings but their very own bed? It’s really quite a change.

Sevina was proud to show us her room.

“Do you guys talk to each other at night?” Terry asks.

“Yes,” Sevina says.

“What do you talk about in here?” Terry asks.

“We say at dinner that we have to read nicely so that we can be a good girl at the end of the day,” Sevina says.

“Wow, so you encourage each other here,” Terry says. “You tell each other to make good choices.”

“Yes,” Sevina says.

“That is great,” Terry exclaims.

While we spent time with Sevina, we didn’t realize it, but she was about to make a big decision

“God’s going to give you a vision for what He wants you to be, and what He wants you to do,” Terry says. “He’ll show you if you ask Him. If you ask Him in your heart, and just say, ‘I want to live for you. Show me what you want me to do.’ Then, He’ll show you. He’ll guide you.”

“Would you like to invite Jesus into your life?” Terry asks.

“Yes,” Sevina says.

“Sevina, just pray with me, say, “Lord Jesus…” Terry says.

“Lord Jesus…” Sevina says.

“I want to know you,” Terry says.

“I want to know you,” Sevina repeats.

“And I want to give my life to you,” Terry says.

“And I want to give my life to you,” Sevina says.

Because of this Christian school, Sevina has a comfortable home and a relationship with Jesus Christ. She’s learning about God, and she’s also learning computer skills and English so that she can have a brighter future.

“You know what I think?,” Terry asks. “I think your mom would be very proud of you today. I really do. I think she would say, ‘My girl is so brave, and she is so smart, and she is so strong, and she is going to have a wonderful life.’ Do you think she thinks that?

“Yeah, I think so,” Terry says. “I think so, too.”
