Kathy Sieg: The Secret to Security

Ask Minnesotan Kathy Sieg what she wishes for, and she’ll tell you: finding security, making her life count for something, and eventually having a log cabin on a lake in northern Minnesota.

As a part-time nurse and mother of three, Kathy Sieg was concerned about her security, a concern that escalated when her marriage of more than 30 years crumbled.

"I was filled with grief and despair and lots of fear that I wouldn’t be able to survive financially or emotionally," she says.

While married, Kathy’s paycheck went toward groceries and incidentals. But when her marriage fell apart, Kathy suddenly became responsible for all her bills. Overcome with a broken heart, Kathy fell into a deep depression.

"I couldn’t eat. I couldn’t sleep. I lost a lot of weight. My friends were worried about me, and I was worried about me, too," Kathy says.

So, day after day, Kathy cried out to God.

Kathy explains, "I would lie in my recliner when I was down, and I would say, 'God, don’t forget me. Don’t leave me here. Use me. Make my life count for something.'"

God answered Kathy’s prayer in a surprising way.

"I turned the TV on, and there was The 700 Club," Kathy says. "I watched it, and I realized that I was feeling comfort and hope."

Soon Kathy became a 700 Club member.

"I started realizing I didn’t miss the $20," she says. "I was paying all the expenses for myself, and my check was lasting."

Still a part-time nurse, Kathy climbed up the giving ladder completely by faith.

"The more I gave, the more I got. Each time I doubled my pledge, my checkbook grew more, so at the end of the year, I would have several thousand in my checking account. It’s just incredible. My money goes farther. It just goes farther," she says.

Then one day, while Kathy was watching a telethon, she felt that God asked her to do the impossible — become a CBN Founder.

"I argued. I turned to God and said, 'God, you can’t mean that. That’s $417! How can I do that? You know I want to quit my job. You know I want my cabin in the woods. How can I give $417 a month?' Then He said, and I heard the words, 'Do it, Kathy. Trust Me because I want to really bless you.' "

Shaking, Kathy picked up the phone and increased her pledge. Before she knew it, one of Kathy’s life wishes came true — Kathy was on her way to India to dedicate a CBN well.

"It was so wonderful when I was there," she says. "Not only did I do the well, but they invited me to go out on their Operation Blessing excursions. They have so many. What a blessing to see all they do over there! The people know it is Jesus; it is through Jesus that they are being helped."

In India, Kathy realized her life really did count for something. That was just the beginning of Kathy’s blessing for obeying God.

For the first time in my life," says Kathy, "I can do whatever I want, buy whatever I want, without worrying about it. That has never happened before. You can’t out-give God. That’s the Law or Reciprocity. I wasn’t a faithful tither before, so I didn't have anything. Nothing has changed except my giving. That is all that changed. Now I have."

Today, Kathy has the security she’s always longed for.

"I feel more peace," she says. "When my security depended on me, I worried. Now, my security depends on Him, and I don’t worry anymore."

And what about that cabin in the woods? Well, Kathy is still hopeful.

"What I have until then is knowing that God has His eye on me. That’s more important than anything I could wish for," she says. "But I do know He’s not through with me yet. He has a lot of good things planned for me."
