What to do in a Financial Crisis

Andy wanted to die. Leaving behind his wife and son seemed easier than facing a failing business and a half a million dollars in debt.

“Everything that I worked so hard for was about to be taken away. I was totally empty, the emptiest I had every felt in my life. It was so bad at the end I thought it would be best that I end my life,” Andy Managniello recalled.

Years before, Andy and his wife Mari Jayne started a trucking business in the Chicago area. They hoped it would prove profitable. But when the money didn’t come in, Andy borrowed more and more to stay afloat. He worked 16 hours a day, but the business never took off. The creditors started pounding at their door. Their mortgage company nearly foreclosed on their home three times.

Mari Jayne knew the one thing that could make a difference during these dark years — the power of prayer. She began to pray like she’d never prayed before.

Mari Jayne said, “There was a peace inside me that I did not know where was coming from. And I was beginning to feel newness in my relationship with God, and a peace that comes from no where else.”

Her peace was strengthened through watching The 700 Club. She also learned the biblical principle of giving. So Mari Jayne started giving ten percent to her church despite Andy’s disapproval.

“I was thinking she was crazy,” Andy said. “’What are you doing giving your money away. We worked hard! What are you doing!’ Yeh, God needs our money but we need it too.”

But Mari Jayne kept giving, and she kept praying for a miracle that would change Andy’s heart. God answered her prayer with a phone call.

Andy said, “One night Mari Jayne had called to see what time I’d be home. And I said, ‘How do I know, it’s only 8’oclock?’ And she called back and said ‘I just want you to know your son just said goodnight to your picture.’
And it crushed me. And that’s when I knew that none of this was worth it. I was losing everything I had.”

Andy asked God to take control of his life, and God told him to close the business. So he did. The following Monday, Andy was offered a job at a trucking company whose owner heard he’d closed his doors.
Andy drew a paycheck immediately. Mari Jayne was thrilled and remembered the lessons she’d learned about giving, so she joined The 700 Club.

And this time, Andy agreed.

But the Manganiellos’ troubles were far from over. Andy had dozens of subpoenas to appear in court for outstanding debt. He decided to face every creditor.

“So I went to court all the time without a lawyer. I figured I didn’t need a lawyer, I had God,” Andy said.

Andy found favor with both judges and creditors. Lenders were more than willing to work with Andy because he had refused to file for bankruptcy. They waived large sums of money and established payment plans to pay off balances. Andy eventually settled all of his $500,000 of debt.

After months of prayer, Andy said the Lord told them to open another business in the trucking industry. This time they did it on a solid foundation of faith in Christ.

Faith Cartage is a successful trucking and warehouse company that has far exceeded the Manganiellos' expectations. They continue to run Faith Cartage on faith. And they continue to be faithful with every aspect of their lives, including their giving.

“I’ve turned everything over to God,” says Andy. “It’s amazing what God has done in this business. I couldn’t have written a business plan this way!”

Andy and Mari Jayne discovered a powerful truth from God’s Word. Luke 6:38 says, “Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap. For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.” (NIV)
