Activist: Muslim Women in Italy Are Chained Up

02-15-2008

The head Italy's Association of Moroccan Women claims that some Muslim women in Italy are kept chained up in their homes. Souad Sbai says "In northern Italy, there are women that live chained at home, from the kitchen to the bathroom, without being able to open the door."

Sbai has also said, "Many women become the property of their husbands, who often take their documents or don't get them residence permits, so they do not legally exist in Italy and they cannot go back home. To the rest of society, these women are invisible. You will not see them dining in a restaurant, or queuing up at the doctor or going to the hairdresser. You will not see them doing the kind of stuff that would be normal in their own country."

A few years ago I was in contact with a person who was trying to help a Muslim woman escape from her husband. She was kept restrained and locked inside their home. I was told that her only contact with the outside world was using the internet while her husband was away. The Muslim woman didn't live in Italy or another European country. She lived in West Virginia.

But back on Italy…as immigration and Islam surge there, the Mayor of Rome says Italia "has lost a little of its will for the future. There is more fear than hope."  It reads somewhat like the death rattle of a nation.
