Five Movies You Should Watch Easter Weekend

Joseph Fiennes and Tom Felton in Risen
Kimberly Carr - Digital Media Producer
  1. Paul, Apostle of Christ

Starring: Jim Caviezel, James Faulkner, Olivier Martinez, Joanne Whalley

MPAA Rating: PG-13 for some violent content and disturbing images

Available to stream from several providers, including Amazon Prime

From a CBN Entertainment movie review:

Scripture as everyday conversation is quite the thing to behold in this film. What's more, the realness of this story all about how the first generation of followers of Jesus dealt with persecution, fear, and doubt is personally refining. Watching the humanity, and struggles, and ultimate faith of these men and women who, in the face of certain death, end up changing the world provides a moving movie experience.

So many scenes (too many to discuss here) are packed full of biblical truth, offering moviegoers a chance to see a deep, quality film about the people who helped preserve the message of Christ, a mission and feat of faith that we all benefit from these many thousands of years later.

2. Risen

Starring: Joseph Fiennes, Tom Felton, Peter Firth, Cliff Curtis, Maria Botto

MPAA Rating: PG-13 for biblical violence including some disturbing images

Available to stream from several providers, including Netflix

From a CBN Entertainment movie review:

Jesus movies are more and more common these days. What sets Risen apart is the interesting angle at which it looks at God's gift to humankind. Through the eyes of a non-believer, we experience the revelation of Jesus' resurrection, as it must have felt centuries ago, as well as, the rebirth of Clavius.

3. Ben Hur (1959)

Starring: Charlton Heston, Jack Hawkins, Stephen Boyd, Haya Harareet

MPAA Rating: G

Available to stream from several providers, including Amazon Prime

Ben Hur is an epic journey through the life of a man and the times in which Jesus lived. The 1959 version is led by the incomparable Charlton Heston, but take a look at this excerpt from a CBN Entertainment movie review about the 2016 film:

Ben-Hur is not a movie for children. Neither is it for the faint of heart. Battle sequences, crucifixions, and moments on a slave-driven ship may be to disturbing for some. Caution is advised.

All in all, Ben-Hur is an epic portrayal of how forgiveness can heal the deepest of wounds. Though not a Bible or Jesus movie, this historical adventure rights the ship when it comes to Hollywood's attempt at making a big-budget, faith-friendly movie. Paramount should be proud and make more films like it and Christians should see it opening weekend so they have a reason to.

4. Amazing Grace

Starring: Ioan Gruffudd, Albert Finney, Michael Gambon

MPAA Rating: PG (for thematic material involving slavery, and some mild language)

Available to stream from several providers, including Amazon Prime

Amazing Grace may not fit into the "Easter Film" category, but it presents powerful stories of suffering, triumph, forgiveness, and redemption. Here's an excerpt from a CBN Entertainment movie review:

Although this movie isn’t a “Christian film,” it has something most movies in theaters do not. A number of the main characters quote Scripture. Their personal faith is of such importance that God’s Word and Biblical principles, such as human dignity and love toward all, permeates the dialogue.

In the film, Wilberforce talks to God and questions his future. Even as a detriment to his health, Wilberforce relentlessly made a case against his country’s unjust policies. His religious convictions and sense of human decency compelled him to persevere even when the situation seemed hopeless.

5. Veggietales: An Easter Carol

Starring: Dan Anderson, Tim Hodge, Tracy Johnson

Not Rated

Available to stream on TBN's Yippee TV

Easter evening in my home would not be complete without Bob The Tomato, Larry The Cucumber, and Uncle Nezzer. In the spirit of Charles Dickens' classic A Christmas Carol, Uncle Nezzer learns the true meaning of Easter, which is far beyond bunnies and baskets.
