More on the Death of Master Terrorist Imad Mugniyeh

02-15-2008

Our friends at HotAir.com have an excellent roundup of the latest Mugniyeh-related news here, including footage of the immediate aftermath of the car bombing that killed the master terrorist. Read--and watch--it all. Here's one of the more interesting tidbits that HA links to, and which I suggested may happen on yesterday's CBN Newswatch. From Haaretz:

The FBI is putting its 101 domestic terror squads on the alert for any threats against synagogues and other potential Jewish targets in the United States after the assassination of the top Hezbollah commander Imad Mughniyah and the movement's leader threatened to punish Israel.

FBI spokesman Rich Kolko said Thursday that no specific threats had been received by any Jewish centers after Tuesday's assassination of Mughniyah in Damascus. Hezbollah and its Iranian backers blamed the killing on Israel, whose government denied involvement but its army would not discuss it.

Perhaps even more juicy are the reports coming from some Kuwaiti media (via Israel National News). I'd definitely double and triple-source these reports for accuracy, but if they have any semblance of truth, Mugniyeh was "martyred" just in time:

A Kuwaiti newspaper reports that Hizbullah terrorist chief Imad Mughniyeh, who was killed in a car-bomb attack in Damascus on Tuesday, was in the midst of planning major terrorist attacks in moderate Arab countries when he was killed.

Al-Watan reports that American intelligence had learned that Mughniyeh arrived in Damascus three days earlier with instructions from, and in coordination with, the Iranians.  His objective was to meet with Hizbullah leaders and coordinate a mass attack, for which he was to receive help from Syrian intelligence.

The American involvement in the killing is explained as being in retaliation for a recent car bomb attack that targeted a U.S. Embassy vehicle; three passersby.

Another Kuwaiti newspaper, Al-Siasa, reports that Mughniyeh took part, shortly before he was killed, in a secret meeting in the Iranian School in Damascus.  Also participating in the meeting were Syrian Intelligence Chief Gen. Aisaf Shwackath, Hamas chief Khaled Mashaal, and an Islamic Jihad representative.  On the agenda: planned attacks in Arab countries that refuse to take part in the coming Arab League summit in Damascus.  The newspaper entertains the possibility that the meeting was merely a camouflage for Syrian involvement in Mughniyeh's killing.

The Syrians? An inside job, then? Who knows. So many questions remain surrounding Imad Mugniyeh's death that may never be answered. I'll leave you with a must-read piece by the Jerusalem Post's incomparable Caroline Glick. If you read one piece about Mugniyeh this weekend, make sure this is the one. I'll say it again: from an operational standpoint, Mugniyeh's death has more importance for the War on Terror than either Bin Laden or al-Zawahiri's would. The mainstream media should be all over this story, but, surprise, it's already disappearing from the headlines
