Is This an Endorsement You Want?

01-25-2008

So John McCain was endorsed by The New York Times. Umm...well....ummm....hmmm.

We'll discuss this in a moment. First read below for some of that endorsement:

We have strong disagreements with all the Republicans running for president. The leading candidates have no plan for getting American troops out of Iraq. They are too wedded to discredited economic theories and unwilling even now to break with the legacy of President Bush. We disagree with them strongly on what makes a good Supreme Court justice.

Still, there is a choice to be made, and it is an easy one. Senator John McCain of Arizona is the only Republican who promises to end the George Bush style of governing from and on behalf of a small, angry fringe. With a record of working across the aisle to develop sound bipartisan legislation, he would offer a choice to a broader range of Americans than the rest of the Republican field.

The whole endorsement is here.

Look, McCan being endorsed by The New York Times is like Hillary being endorsed by The Sean Hannity Radio Show. All this endorsement does is give McCain''s opponents more amunition to make the case that he's not a conservative on ALL the issues.

Now having said that, McCain has been racking up the conservative newspaper endorsements, too, so just because he's been endorsed by the Times doesn't tell the whole story.

Here's the bottom line: If Giuliani loses Florida, this race is shaping up to be a contest over who can get the most Republican voters.

McCain is the darling of the Independents, but McCain will need to do even better among hard core Republicans to win this nomination, especially because some of these upcoming primaries are closed - meaning that Independents can't vote.
