Stumping in Barnwell with Bill

Robin Mazyck here with another guest blog on The Brody File.

My photographer Jonah and I finally made it to the Low Country of South Carolina and the tiny town of Barnwell.

Let me set the stage for you. Barnwell is so small that if you blink one time too many you'd drive right through it and miss it. There are no major highways that take you to Barnwell. You have to take a series of back roads, many of which are unmarked, to get here. Barnwell has a population of about 5,000. About 50 percent of the people who live in this town are white and about 50 percent are African American.

We are in the auditorium of Barnwell Primary School, which is basically full. There are probably about 250 people here tonight, which is not bad for a town of this size.

President Clinton began his speech by telling us that he met Mrs. Clinton in 1971. He told the audience that if they'd never gotten married, he'd still support his wife because of all the work she's done in the public sector.

He sounded very much like the proud husband who has recently been harshly criticized by Republicans and Democrats alike, throughout his entire speech he never mentioned Barack Obama. He spoke only of his wife and her accomplishments. Occasionally, he mentioned the failings of the current White House administration and the successes he saw while President.

I have met all the spouses of the remaining Democratic candidates and let me tell you former President Clinton is just as proud and enthusiastic as the rest of them. Is this a problem? For many it is. Some say he's not playing fair, and he's being too rough, but do you blame him?

If your spouse was being targeted wouldn't you do whatever it took to fight back and defend his or her honor? Elizabeth Edwards would. Michelle Obama would.

A few weeks ago, I asked Elizabeth Edwards about her passion. She talked about her husband's calling to be a public official. Despite her terminal illness, she is traveling back and forth, across the country urging people to vote for him.

Former President Clinton spent much of the time on stage talking about the economy, the country's dependency on foreign oil, energy conservation and his wife's platform.

The audience sat in rapt attendance. I know you think I'm crazy, but they truly were enthralled by him.

After his speech, President Clinton walked down into the crowd and answered questions.

One person asked him, "When Hillary is elected, what will we call you?"

To laughter, President Clinton replied "I'll be so happy she gets elected, I won't know what to do."

Someone also asked him who he liked in the Super Bowl.

Watch his responses by clicking on the play button above.

Of course he also answered serious questions too. They ranged from concerns about the value of the dollar, Sen. Clinton's opinion on nuclear energy, how she plans to help veterans from the current war in Iraq as well as Vietnam and the benefits of using bamboo to create energy efficient homes.
