Compromise

01-26-2008

John McCain has been ripped to shreds because of his deal making with either Ted Kennedy on immigration or Russ Feingold on campaign finance reform or the Gang of 14 judges deal. But let's step back for a moment.

Isn't compromise what it's all about in Washington? I mean it's great to talk about all the changes you're going to bring to Washington but the harsh reality is that you need to work with the other party and compromise. Anything controversial in the Senate will require 60 votes, no small task. So while McCain gets beat up a lot for these deals, he's also been around Washington long enough to know that if you don't bend nothing will get done.

Mitt Romney's campaign theme now is "Washington is Broken". But the only way it gets fixed is if both sides come together. Galvanizing Republicans only won't do it. We've seen Romney work together before with Ted Kennedy in Massachusetts on the issue of healthcare. So the real question is where will he be willing to compromise? On what issues? What are his non-negotiables? And maybe more important, what are his negotiables?
