Paul Weyrich Endorses Huckabee

02-11-2008

My good friend and political partner in crime Robin Mazyck just returned from a Mike Huckabee event in Virginia Beach, Va., and reports that Huckabee told the crowd that Paul Weyrich is endorsing him.

Weyrich is a big name in conservative circles and is well respected within the social conservative movement. First he endorsed Romney last November. After Romney shocked supporters by suspending his campaign last week, Weyrich's endorsement was up for grabs again.

Weyrich decided to throw his support to Huckabee with hopes of influencing conservative voters in the coming primaries. It's a crucial move just a day before the Potomac primaries where Virginia will be such an important state to win for the Huckabee campaign.

Robin tells me that when she asked Huckabee whether he wished the endorsement had come sooner, he basically said that he never turns one down and that he is grateful for it because Weyrich has been a mentor of his since 1979 when they met in Dallas.

Huckabee did wish it would have come sooner but his attitude was "that's OK." Read the actual quote below and watch above:

"I never turn one down, and I'm grateful that he's given me his endorsement. It's significant. He's been a mentor to me for 28 years, actually longer than that. I guess the first time I met Paul was in 1979, in April '79 Dallas, Texas, and so clearly I'm just personally grateful for it even if it didn't mean something for the campaign, I think it does, it's something for which I'm personally grateful.

"He called me first of all and initiated the conversation and just indicated to me that he felt like I was the one guy that was left who was a true conservative that really believed things that mattered to a lot of conservatives and it involved everything from strong national defense to immigration to tax policy, the life question, there were many different reasons, and so obviously it was good news for me."
