A Godwink Christmas

“Out of seven billion people on the planet, a Godwink is a direct, person-to-person message of hope and encouragement,” shares SQuire. Godwinks happen to everyone. They are extraordinary things that have happened to you; things you perhaps wondered about and maybe even dismissed as too unbelievable to believe. “When you develop the ability to see the Godwinks that are unfolding in your life, your entire existence becomes infinitely richer, happier, and more certain,” shares SQuire.

While writing his first book, When God Winks, SQuire found himself asking, “If there’s no coincidence to coincidence, what do you call it?” Louise and SQuire talked and prayed about it for weeks. “One day the new little word floated into his consciousness⎯ “Godwink” ⎯ it was fun and friendly like “Godsend” or “Godspeed”, shares SQuire. He substituted “Godwink” for every use of the term “coincidence” in his manuscript and it worked. Today Godwinks is showing up in dictionaries, news stories, and is in the fourth season of a monthly segment on NBC Today. In the dictionary Godwink is defined as a coincidence that is not coincidence but instead originates from a divine source.

SQuire and Louise believe the more you acknowledge God as the source of your Godwinks, the more you will see them. They have co-authored four of the Godwink books. They believe that every Godwink is a gift, “A beautifully wrapped package left on your doorstep, just for you. Our aim is to inspire you to open the door and open your gift.”

In Godwink Christmas Stories SQuire and Louise share 21 new and 9 classic true stories of “Godwinks” at Christmastime that demonstrate how God has shown Himself in the lives of others. Below are some of those stories:

  • The Job of a Christmas Angel – “When you play an angel on TV, some people think you are an angel in real life,” shares Roma Downey. One day, during a Christmas break from the TV show, Touched by an Angel, Roma was visiting a children’s hospital. She was wearing a red-and-white Santa cap and hoped to bring a ray of hope to children and their hurting families. As she approached one room, she observed a family exiting and holding on to one another. In a moment she knew what had happened. “You could feel the grief, like a gust of wind out of that room,” shares Roma. She respectfully removed her Santa cap and stepped into the corner. As the grieving mother’s eyes met Roma’s, her expression transformed into a look of hope indicating that she knew exactly who the popular actress was. The woman stepped toward Roma and said, “I prayed that an angel would come for my baby and here you are.” Roma wanted to say, “No, you’re wrong. I’m not really an angel. I’m an actress who plays an angel.” Instead she placed her arm around the grieving mother and prayed for her. Then she smiled and said, “God be with you.” Fearful she had led the woman to believe she was something that she was not, Roma left the hospital with mixed feelings. She called her good friend, Della Reese and expressed how she felt like a fraud because she let the mother believe God sent her. Della responded by saying, “And who says He didn’t? There are times when we need to step out of the way and let God use us to channel His grace.”
  • A Charlotte Inn Christmas – The story which inspired the Hallmark movie, A Godwink Christmas is about Paula and Gery Conover owners of the Charlotte Inn in Martha’s Vineyard. Paula is a St. Louis antique appraiser who reluctantly accepted a marriage proposal from her boyfriend Daniel. Her Aunt Jane invites Paula to her Nantucket home. When Paula visits nearby Martha's Vineyard, she meets a charming inn owner, Gery (pronounced GARY), and enjoys celebrating the holiday festivities with him. Although Paula develops feelings for Gery, she moves forward with her engagement, but Aunt Jane reminds her that sometimes we receive messages from above to help determine which direction life should take. The Godwink of foggy weather repeats itself, preventing Paula from departing, so she winds up staying at Gery's inn and enjoying local holiday festivities alongside him. They begin to have feelings for each other. She’s drawn to Gery’s values for the tradition of holidays and family history. The weather clears, sending Paula back to Nantucket before her return to St. Louis. Sensing Paula has fallen for Gery, Aunt Jane shares her belief that their meeting was God's way of "winking" at her to help determine which direction her life should take.

Executives at Hallmark chose the love story of Paula and Gery as the first of the Godwinks Movie Series. The movie, A Godwink Christmas, will premiere on November 18 starring Kimberley Sustad, Paul Campbell, and Kathie Lee Gifford. During the filming of the movie, SQuire and Louise prayed for it to snow in Martha’s Vineyard. It usually does not snow that time of year, but the last weekend of filming it began to snow which allowed for some beautiful footage during the movie. On Monday, they got the last shot, the weather went back up to the 40’s and all the snow melted. In the movie, the Godwink of foggy weather helped Gery find perfect love. When making the movie, the Godwink of weather was provided again as it snowed and provided a beautiful background for this romantic movie.  Although it took several years to get this movie produced, SQuire and Louise are thankful that God knew exactly when to release this movie. They believe the movie today will have more impact on our culture than it would four years previously.

The movie will air on the Hallmark Movies & Mysteries Channel on Sunday, November 18th at 9pm ET/PT.
