Would She Ever Feel Pretty?

Every time Yi heard a hint of music, she started to dance.

Her mom explains, “She would clap her hands, twist her little hips, and laugh like a jolly little elf.”

At first, her dancing got her a lot of positive attention. But when kids looked more closely at Yi, that changed.

Mrs. Liu recounts, “One day, I heard a child say to her mother, ‘Mommy, look at that girl’s mouth. Shouldn’t she go to the hospital? She looks terrible.’”

She was referring to Yi’s cleft lip and palate.

Yi’s sister MengQi says, “She had a tear in her lip, kind of like a rabbit. So, kids bullied her and said she was ugly.”

Mr. Liu adds, “Yi’s sister used to stand in front of her when people said mean things. That warmed my heart, but I also felt ashamed because I couldn’t do anything to fix my daughter’s lip.”

Mr. Liu got a job out of town in construction to try to raise money for surgery, but then he pulled a muscle. And for a while, the family couldn’t even afford milk powder.

“I had to put rice and medicine on credit,” confesses Mrs. Liu.

Mr. Liu adds, “When I told my boss, he just shut the door and refused to let me in. I felt useless.”

Meanwhile, Yi kept falling down and hurting her lip. Her sister read fairy tales to her like “The Ugly Duckling.”  She assured Yi that one day, she’d have a fairytale ending.

She says, “I told her she would turn into a beautiful white swan, and she smiled.”

Mrs. Liu remembers, “She touched the gap in her lips said, ‘Mom, if I touch it, it will get better.’ But I was really afraid that when she grew up, she would say ‘Why did you make my life a joke?’”

Finally, a friend told the Lius about CBN. And we made Yi’s fairytale ending come true.

“She’s regaining her confidence and can dance and do what she likes to do,” exclaims Mrs. Liu. She adds, “When people ask her how her mouth got better, she says ‘Some nice people helped me, so now my mouth looks good!’”

“I really appreciate CBN. You have helped Yi and given her a happy childhood and bright future,” says Mr. Liu.  He continues, “And You told us that God loves the poor. Through your help, I can feel this love! Now I would like to know this God because I believe God is love.”

MengQi concludes, “You patched my sister’s lip. Thank you for bringing us all joy!”
