A Salafist terrorist organization in the Gaza Strip claimed responsibility for firing a rocket at the southern Israeli city of Sderot on Sunday.

The midday rocket landed between two homes but caused no damage or injuries.

Israel responded to the attack, sending Air Force jets to target Hamas positions in the northern Gaza Strip, the IDF said in a statement.  Palestinians said IDF tanks also fired into the Gaza Strip.

Fourteen rockets launched from Gaza have hit Israel since the beginning of the year.

"The IDF remains committed to the stability of the region and operated in order to bring quiet to the people of southern Israel," IDF Spokesman Lt. Col. Peter Lerner, said in a statement.

"When terrorists in Hamas' Gaza Strip, driven by a radical agenda based on hatred, attack people in the middle of the summer vacation, their intentions are clear- to inflict pain, cause fear and to terrorize," Lerner said.

But residents of Sderot carried on with plans to celebrate on Sunday evening, holding their Heart of Sderot festival.  Sderot's Mayor Alon David was quoted as saying that terrorism "will not defeat us and will not break out citizens' fortitude."

Meanwhile, Israeli media reported on Sunday that explosive devices smuggled by Hezbollah had been discovered recently along Israel's northern border.
