Egypt's President Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi pledges that those responsible for stripping and parading an elderly woman through the streets will not go unpunished.

The drama unfolded in the Egyptian village of Karama, located in the Minya province of southern Cairo. A mob of approximately 300 Muslim men victimized the 70-year-old Christian woman after rumors spread that her son had an affair with a Muslim woman. The perpetrators also torched her home and several other Christian homes in the process.

"They burned the house and went in and dragged me out, threw me in front of the house and ripped my clothes. I was just as my mother gave birth to me, screaming and crying," the woman told Reuters.

El-Sissi condemned the attack and the attackers on local television.

"We are all Egyptians who are equal in rights and duties," el-Sissi said. "It is not appropriate that what happened be repeated. Whoever commits an offense will be held accountable."

El-Sissi has promised to ease restrictions on Christians' religious freedoms, but they still face persecution. This latest incident is an example of the escalating tensions between Muslims and Christians in southern Cairo.
