A tornado touched down in Kansas Wednesday evening, causing severe damage in the area.

The EF-3 twister was on the ground for more than an hour as it swept over the northern part of the state.

Officials say that as many as 25 homes were destroyed and some were completely wiped out.

It is reported that 75 to 80 firefighters and Kansas Highway Patrol troopers are checking on people in the community.

"We have troopers and emergency responders here," said Trooper Ben Gardner, who is also the spokesman for the Kansas Highway Patrol.

"We are getting a game plan and are having these people breaking up into groups," he continued. "They are being tasked to go and identify homes that are on their route."

"There are sections they need to locate and make contact with everybody in that section that they have been given to make a head count, to determine what kinds of injuries or damage," he explained. "We have to truly access what we have and what resources are needed to be positioned across this county."

Two people are reportedly in critical condition and five others were hurt, but only suffered minor injuries.
