The Democratic convention in Philadelphia was supposed to be a coronation for Hillary Clinton as the first woman ever nominated for president by a major party. Instead, the Democrats are embroiled in controversy over emails and the head of the DNC is resigning.

DNC Chair Debbi Wasserman Schultz is steppging down after leaked emails revealed that the party leadership was favoring Clinton over her opponent, socialist Sen. Bernie Sanders.

Some 19,000 messages were published on WikiLeaks, right before the start of the Democratic National Convention.

In one leaked email, a DNC official wondered whether Sanders' religious beliefs could be used against him, questioning whether the candidate may be an atheist.

On Sunday, Sanders said the emails proved that the DNC planned to support the former secretary of state from the very beginning.

"I'm not shocked, but I'm disappointed" by the exchanges in the emails, Sanders told ABC's "This Week."

Sanders called for Rep. Schultz, D-Fla., to resign as DNC chairwoman immediately and told CNN's Jake Tapper that the DNC's actions are an outrage.

"I am not an atheist," he said. "But aside from all of that, it is an outrage and sad that you would have people in important positions in the DNC trying to undermine my campaign."

Some party loyalists say the DNC can't ignore the emails.

And Donald Trump's campaign chairman, Paul Manafort, said Sanders' supporters "have a lot to complain about."

"The emails have proven the system was rigged from the start," Manafort told "Fox News Sunday."

Although Sanders has endorsed Clinton, his delegates now want a state-by-state tally. The state-by-state roll call is scheduled for Tuesday.
