WASHINGTON -- House Majority Whip Steve Scalise, R-LA, remains in critical condition following a congressional baseball practice shooting, though doctors say his health is improving.

Dr. Jack Sava at MedStar Washington Hospital Center says Scalise's vital signs have stabilized after several operations.

Scalise is still under sedation but Sava says he has responded to family members.

Sava says Scalise will remain in the hospital for "a considerable period of time" and faces more operations.
