Groups in Kansas Worried for Religious Rights

09-08-2014

Religious leaders in Kansas, spanning the denominational gamut, are asking state legislators to provide legal protection for believers who refuse goods and services for same-sex marriages because of their religious convictions.

A federal judge recently ruled Kansas must recognize gay marriages from other states, raising concern about the future of religious freedom in their state.

Catholic, Presbyterian, Baptist, and Mormon leaders, among others, said their denominations do not condone unjust treatment of anybody.

State senators held hearings on the matter this week, but the president of the Senate said continuing the debate will have to wait till next year.
