Liberty University President: Guns Allowed in Dorms
Liberty University's president is proposing that students at the school be allowed to bring concealed weapons into dormitories.
The announcement Wednesday by President Jerry Falwell Jr. comes days after he encouraged students to get permits to carry concealed guns.
Last week, Falwell addressed the student body in response to the mass shooting in San Bernardino, California.
"I've always thought if more good people had concealed carry permits, then we could end those Muslims before they walked in and killed them," he said.
Although Falwell has been condemned for his remarks, some have praised him for his comments, including his students who have requested the change in dorm policy.
"That's because of a lot of requests I've received from you, from students about it not being a good idea having gun free zones in the residence halls, so we're making that change at your request," he said.
In an interview with The Associated Press, Falwell said the guns-in-dorms proposal would have a limited impact because most students who are old enough to get a carry-conceal permit live off campus.
In Virginia, 21 is the minimum age to get a concealed-carry permit. Guns are already allowed on the school's campus, but dorms had been a "gun-free zone."
The school's governing board must approve the change.
