A portrait of Jesus has been removed from a Kansas middle school where it had hung for decades.

The Chanute School district's lawyer advised the superintendent that Royster Middle School could not legally display the print of Warner Sallman's famous painting, "Head of Christ."

The Wichita Eagle reports that issues arose after the district received a complaint from the Wisconsin-based Freedom from Religion Foundation.

Ryan Jayne of the foundation said he thinks it's "wonderful" that the district responded the way it did and as quickly as it did, but many Chanute residents are unhappy.

One former student said, "not enough people have Christ in their lives."
