Houston Hammered by Dangerous Deluge

Houston is being pounded by heavy and dangerous rain that just won't let up. Storms have already dumped more than a foot of water, flooding homes and major highways, cutting the power to thousands of homes.

The downpours have been deadly for drivers in the nation's fourth largest city, with at least five bodies found in submerged vehicles.

Some areas have actually seen rainfall approaching 20 inches, with flash flooding and more rain possible Tuesday.

One daring escape was captured in a live news report from a local ABC station, with the stunned driver asking the reporter, "What should I do?"

As the vehicle sank further into the flood, the reporter shouted, encouraging the driver to get out and "swim!"

Moments later the car was entirely submerged.

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott went on TV to remind drivers not to take the risk when they encounter water in the roadways.

"Please remember the phrase 'turn around, don't drown.' Do not drive into the rising water!" Abbott warned.

Even more rain is expected in the Houston area over the next few days. The downpours won't be as heavy, but flood warnings and watches remain in effect for much of southern Texas.
