Tornadoes swept across Alabama, Louisiana, and Mississippi Thursday night.

The twisters snapped trees and downed power lines and emergency management officials say dozens of homes were damaged.

One family in Mississippi is just grateful to be alive, having raced to safety seconds before the tornado hit their property.

"We took off running and just heard nothing but a train. I said, 'This is it,'" Don Smith, from Lowndes County, Mississippi, said.

"We got in the house and then stuff started falling. When we come running out of the shop, there was some tin come flying off the top of the shop there," he continued. "It was like nothing I've ever seen or been in."

The National Weather Service is warning about more severe weather as the storm system hits the Carolinas.
