A 4-year-old boy who was internally decapitated not only beat the odds by surviving, but is now actually thriving. He's expected to make a full recovery, thanks to the quick thinking of two Good Samaritans who happened upon the near-fatal car crash in which he was involved.

Little Killian Gonzalez has been released from the a Boise, Idaho, hospital and is walking and talking again. His mother Brandy was also released from the hospital.

She sent a video of her son cheerfully chatting while playing a board game to KBOI-TV.

"He's doing amazing. Sore, but amazing," she said.

The TV station also posted a touching video of when mother and son were first reunited after being released from separate hospitals.

"How are you? I miss you! Can I come sit by you?" she says to her son.

The two are now recovering at Brandy's mother's home in Montana.

Killian would likely have died from the car crash had it not been for Joel and Leah Woodward, who arrived on the scene moments after it had occurred.

Joel is an officer with the Nampa, Idaho Police Department. His emergency training taught him not to move automobile accident victims unless the vehicle is on fire.

His wife, Leah, held Killian's head perfectly still for an entire 30 minutes until emergency crews arrived and were able to stabilize the youngster's head, neck and spine with a special brace.

Leah didn't know it at the time, but while she was holding the boy's head, it was barely attached to the rest of his body. Even the slightest movement could have broken the connection. This is why the vast majority of peole who sustain this type of injury, called occipital-cervical dislocation, nicknamed "internal decapitation," die.

Brandy thanked Leah for saving her son's life.

"There's a reason we're here and we're just going to try every day to figure out what that reason is," she said.
