The Bible in its entirety is being read out loud, non-stop at the nation's Capitol this week.

The 27th annual U.S. Capitol Bible Reading Marathon began with hymn singing and prayer Sunday evening at the Capitol Plaza and is still going strong.

Rev. Rob Schenck, president of the National Clergy Council, started the marathon with the opening line of Genesis, "In the beginning God Created the heavens and the Earth."

Volunteers take turns reading scripture from the podium day and night until Thursday, the National Day of Prayer.

The event's co-director, Rev. Michael Hall, says participants will continue reading regardless of the weather or opposition from secularists.
