Ohio State linebacker Joe Burger never imagined he would be awarded a full scholarship the day he joined the team as a walk-on freshman.

But four years later Burger has made such a lasting impression on his coaches and teammates that the 6-foot-2 230 pound senior was awarded a full ride last year and named team captain.

Burger said that although getting a scholarship was not his No. 1 goal, he worked hard and helped the team any way it needed.

"My No. 1 goal was always to contribute to the team — to put in the effort in the weight room, on the practice field, watching tape of upcoming opponents, and then, if given the shot, to play well in games," Burger told the National Catholic Register. "It's great to have schooling paid for and also to be a captain, but even if neither of those happened, being a productive part of the team is the most important thing."

Burger told the faith publication that throughout his college and football years he has relied heavily on his faith and prayer.

"One really important thing I've learned is how to pray better. Instead of rushing into prayer and then back out of it, I've learned to consciously take a second to be in the presence of God," he said. "Prayer isn't supposed to be a multiplication of words, but a simple, humble connection with God. If we don't stop to take a breath and relax in his presence, we aren't really praying effectively, no matter how many words we might say."

Burger said that although football is the most visible thing in his life, prayer has shaped his character.

"What I've found, though, is that when I pray well, it's not usually a matter of things outside me being changed, as it is a matter of things inside me being changed. There's an improvement of life simply because I'm looking at things with eyes of faith," he said.
