The Taliban launched a suicide attack on the Afghan parliament Monday, killing a 10-year-old girl and a woman, and wounding 31 others, including two women and two children.

The attack began with a car bomb explosion near the entrance of parliament as lawmakers were meeting to confirm the appointment of a defense minister.

The terrorists then tried to storm the compound, but security forces pushed them into a nearby building, where they killed all seven attackers.

No parliamentarians were wounded.

Afghan President Ashraf Ghani strongly condemned the Taliban attack.

"Targeting innocent people in the holy month of Ramadan is a clear act of hostility against the religion of Islam," Ghani's office said in a statement, calling the attackers "criminals who are bound by no creed or religion."

Taliban insurgents have launched complex attacks on government targets in the capital in the past.
