An independent British school is eliminating its 200-year-old uniform code in order to accommodate transgender students.

Richard Cairns, headmaster of Brighton College, declared to students and faculty that a new policy would replace the school's two-century-old uniform code. Transgender students age 16 and up can now dress according to their preferred sexual identity.

Brighton College commented on the new dress code, saying that it "feels it is time to break ranks" amongst the traditionally conservative public schools.

The school further claims that it is simply "reacting to a changing society which recognizes that some children have gender dysphoria and do not wish to lose their emotional gender identities at school."

The new dress code allows girls who identify as boys to wear a blazer, trousers, and a tie, while boys who identify as girls can wear skirts and open-neck blouses.

Parents whose children identify as transgendered must tell school administrators of their child's circumstances.

Since the policy change, at least one student follows the optional dress code.

The controversial dress code policy was enacted after what Cairns reports were "requests from a small number of families."

He added: "It ties in with my strong personal belief that youngsters should be respected for who they are."
