An Algerian court sentenced 49-year-old Slimane Bouhafs to three years of imprisonment after he converted from Islam to Christianity.

Bouhafs was arrested after he denounced Islam on his Facebook page.

According to Middle East Concern, he published a message on social media "about the light of Jesus overcoming the lie of Islam and its prophet."

The Algerian League for the Defense of Human Rights (LADDH) denounced the verdict, saying Bouhaf's conviction violated his constitutional rights.

According to Open Doors, Bouhaf's family is concerned about his health. He suffers from inflammatory rheumatism, a painful disease that is worsened by stress. He will be seeking an appeal on his sentence.

Christians are a minority in Algeria, with 99 percent of the population being Muslim. A majority of the Christians living in Algeria are converts from Islam.
