River of Blood Flows Through Capital of This Muslim Country

A disturbing sight was seen throughout the capital city of Bangladesh Thursday as the country celebrated an Islamic holiday with mass animal sacrifices.

The city's streets have been turned into a red river, colored by blood, during the Islamic festival of Eid al-Adha, the "feast of sacrifice."

Muslims slaughter animals to remember the way Abraham obeyed God by taking Isaac up on a mountain as a sacrifice. Muslims, however, have changed the biblical account, claiming that God rescued Ishmael, not Isaac.

Usually a goat, sheep or a cow is killed to commemorate Abraham's, or Ibrahim as Muslims refer to him, test of faith.

In Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh, residents have been using parking lots, garages and alleys to kill large numbers of animals. Heavy rains have washed an enormous amount of blood into the street.

Flooding is common in Dhaka, an overcrowded city of more than 10 million people, because of poor drainage systems.
