Is Your Job a Training Ground for Something New?

Robert Legg and his wife, Shirley, are the founders of the successful pool management company USA Pools. Communities hire USA Pools to take care of everything from chemicals to lifeguards.

“The first year we had one pool. Year two, a little bit more than double -- we had three. Year three was six; year four was 12 pools; year five there were 24 pools. And that’s exactly how it went,” noted Robert.

Robert credits his years of success to his strong faith in God and his commitment to give, so it might surprise you to learn that 30 years ago Robert had nothing. He had wracked up debt, lost his job, and the bank had foreclosed on his house.

“I was devastated,” he explained, “because nothing like that had ever happened before.’

Shirley, a Christian, was convinced that their lives could change if Robert accepted the Lord. At a weekend marriage seminar, Robert did just that. When the offering plate came around at the end of the marriage weekend, Shirley asked if they could give everything they had: their last $70.

“Give every penny we have and I don’t have a job?” Robert initially thought. “But it wasn’t a debate or an argument. I just said, “OK, I don’t know what we are going to do. We’ll have to live at your mother’s.”

Almost immediately Robert got a new job and moved his family to Atlanta. They found a church with a pastor who encouraged them to double tithe, so the Leggs started giving 20 percent. Everything was great until Robert was laid off from his new job. Now they had a choice to make. Could they continue with the double tithe while living on unemployment?

“To me there was no decision to be made,” Robert recalled. “There are some things you don’t change, and that was one of them.”

Robert eventually got another job in Atlanta, also in the chemical industry. He had no idea it was the portal God would use for a financial miracle.

“I got a call from the community I lived in, and they asked if I could get pool chemicals,” Robert explained. “I said sure, I’d be glad to help. It was my community. A short time later, ‘Will you take care of this pool? We’ll pay you.’ I said, ‘No, I’m not going to let you pay me, but I’ll try to help out.’ I didn’t know anything about swimming pools. The next summer, while I was still working with chemicals, two more communities called me and asked if I’d take care of their pools because they had heard I took care of the one in my area.”

Robert said God told him to start a new business, USA Pools. Robert found himself surrounded by believers who helped him learn about pools and running a business. He continued to double tithe, and the number of pools continued to double every year.

The Leggs are now enjoying a new phase of their lives. Their four children are grown. Robert’s oldest son now manages USA Pools, and, of course, there are lots of grandkids to enjoy. Robert knows that their life today would not have been possible if he had not turned his life over to God and completely trusted Him with his finances.

“If I could tell anyone on the planet anything,” Robert offered, “I would say try it. Just try it and watch what God will do. I’m a living testimony to it.”
