A Prescription for Blessing Others

Angelica Lopez makes and sells the most popular tortillas of her village in Chiquimula, Guatemala.

Her husband Emilio is a construction worker. Together, they were providing for their little girl, and even putting a little money away. But they weren’t prepared when little Brandi got sick.

“We were doing well,” Angelica remembers. “He was working, I was selling tortillas, but when my baby got sick, I couldn’t work and we had to use up our savings.”

In the hospital, doctors told them Brandi had bronchopneumonia, but they didn’t have the right medicine to treat her. Angelica and Emilio tried other remedies, until they ran out of money. Meanwhile, Brandi just got sicker.

“My husband worked and worked and we spent the money he earned on medicine for Brandi, but that medicine didn’t work,” Angelica says.

But thanks to CBN partners, new and effective medicines are now available for Brandi and for hundreds of others in Guatemala.

Operation Blessing installed more than 200 portable medical clinics and in 40 communities across the country.

Doctors visit the villages frequently and give out free medicine for the people that come with prescriptions from local hospitals. They also train volunteers to work in the clinics.

“We have traveled to the most isolated communities of Guatemala and it does not matter how long we have to walk to take this blessing to the people,” explains Dr. Eduardo Corona.

And this blessing saves lives. The antibiotic, Loravid, has become a powerful weapon against bronchopneumonia, one of the main causes of death among children in Guatemala.

Says Dr. Corona, “We didn’t have Loravid in Guatemala and we never had the opportunity to use it.”

It was the medicine that saved Brandi’s life.

“Thank God,” exclaims Emilio. “When she took the medicine, she started to feel better, and we were very happy and thankful to God because she had been healed with the medicine Operation Blessing sent.”

Today Brandi is happy and well.

And we had a surprise for Brandi’s parents! Angelica received funds to start her own business selling grain in her village. And Emilio’s new saw and drill will help him at work.

“Every time we see our baby smiling and playing, we remember CBN partners because they sent the medicine she needed,” says a very thankful Emilio.
