Armed Taliban jihadists staged a coordinated assault on the capital of Afghanistan Tuesday killing at least 28 people.

It began with a suicide car bombing in Kabul that claimed dozens of lives and left more than 320 people wounded.

Sediq Sediqqi, spokesman for the Afghan Interior Ministry, said the car bombing was then followed by a gun battle between the terrorists and Afghan security officials.

Afghan officials say the attack targeted an agency similar to the U.S. Secret Service. The agency is responsible for protecting high-ranking government officials.

President Ashraf Ghani condemned the attack "in the strongest possible terms" in a statement released from the presidential palace.

The Taliban has stepped up its violent attacks after announcing the commencement of their spring offensive last week.
